Time remaining vs time since
A live countdown automatically switches between “time remaining” (future) and “time since” (past).
When your target date-time is later than the current moment, you’ll see a live “time remaining” countdown that updates every second.
If the target passes, the calculator can show “time since” (elapsed time) — or you can choose to stop at the target moment.
Try it: Countdown
The sign comes from whether target is before or after “now”.
Controls: pause + stop at target
If you don’t need a constantly ticking display, you can pause updates or freeze the counter at the target moment.
“Live updates” controls the 1-second ticking. Turning it off gives you a stable snapshot and can reduce battery/CPU usage on low-power devices.
“Stop counter at target” freezes the counter at 00:00:00 once the target is reached. This avoids an ever-growing “time since” timer.
Try it: Pause and stop-at-target
Use pause for performance, and stop-at-target to keep a true countdown experience.
Alarm: at target or before
An in-page alarm can alert you at the target moment (or a few seconds before).
The alarm supports sound, visual highlight, and (on some devices) vibration. It works while the page is open.
Browsers may throttle background tabs, so for critical reminders you should keep the tab active or use a dedicated reminder app.
Try it: Alarm
Great for “heads up” alerts while you’re actively planning on the page.
Saving your countdown (persistence)
Your countdown target and preferences are automatically saved in your browser, so they persist across page refreshes and visits.
The calculator saves two types of data to your browser's localStorage: (1) your target date and time, and (2) your preferences like alarm settings and control toggles.
When you return to the page, your countdown picks up where you left off — no need to re-enter the target. If the target has passed more than 24 hours ago, it resets to a fresh default.
Your preferences (alarm enabled, sound/visual/vibrate toggles, live updates, stop-at-target) are "sticky" and apply to future countdowns too.
Try it: Set a target and refresh
Close the tab and come back later — your countdown and settings will still be there.
Timezone and DST (why results change)
Countdowns are only meaningful when “now” and the target are interpreted in the same timezone.
This calculator interprets both your target time and the current time in your device’s local timezone, and displays the timezone label (e.g., GMT+05:30).
Daylight Saving Time can make “a day” not always equal exactly 24 hours in some regions. That’s why totals like “total hours” are often more precise than “calendar days”.
Try it: Date Difference (As-of)
For precise planning, focus on hours/minutes/seconds and the exact timestamp.
Totals and breakdowns (days/hours/minutes/seconds)
A good countdown shows both a human-readable breakdown and “total” values for comparisons and spreadsheets.
Breakdowns (days/hours/minutes/seconds) are easy to read at a glance, while totals help you compare durations or plug numbers into other calculations.
Weeks + days is computed from whole days; any leftover hours/minutes remain in the time portion of the live countdown.
Try it: Business Days Countdown
Use totals for precision; use the breakdown for quick readability.
